hello JJ, how are you doing. I am verry happy to read a brief description concerning my school named Bereko Secondary school located in a small town of Bereko. according to your explanations, you camped at that school with your fellow bycle riders on april 2005. I am even happier to read that you met my teachers Sauri and Vumillia (you spelled Vomillia). these are my teachers and I was in my grade four that year. I am now in university level. I real thank my teachers for bringing me in this level of education. I also thank you for remaining me of my teachers and my beloved school at this moment.
May God bless you.

Hi Mr. Hilsinger.
I worked for you at the Lone Star from 1995-2006 and as always I think you are a great motivater. I want to wish you good health and a safe ride.
I'd also like you to know that I walk the 6.6 km return trip to work each day and my daughter and I walk or ride our bikes wherever time allows rather than take our car.
We use recycled bags, we pick up trash and we use re-usable drink containers rather than buy water and coffee. I have trained everyone to turn off lights and televisions and to use our water sparingly.
I hope you continue to inspire and set an example and to use your life to motivate others.
All the best!

Hi JJ

Good luck with your trek. Our family has committed to a 5 tonne reduction over the next 3 years.

I hope the Sault embraces the LEED building standard. There are no Green Buildings listed here; http://www.cagbc.org/green_building_projects/leed_certified_buildings.php?id=58&press=1&draw_column=3:3:2

I find it hard to believe living in the north that we have not embraced the LEED building standard!

Also there is this story.... why wouldn't the Sault go after a dealership, surely we have entrepeneurs who could seek this out?

Hi JJ
Is it still possible to buy the cd you have made? I didn't get round to it when you emailed me about the possibility long ago, as I have had a busy year since we came back last year. I had a daughter in march, finished my Masters in Strategic Communication in may and at the same time worked part time for the Danish Ski Federation as a project manager. Know I am unemployed and looking for work.
Thanks for the good times we had in Africa and I hope you are doing well wherever you are in the world. Keep up the good spirit.

Hi Jim; This is another blast from the past. I worked for you at
The Water Tower Inn way back in the late 70's. I sure do remember the persona you emulated. You were always tough, and
no one could ever tell you what to do. You always took on a challenge, and usually succeeded. I even remember when those
bus tours would come in and we would get a call to come to earn
some extra cash, sorting out and delivering baggage to those seniors. Yes Jim, you often rolled up those hefty excutive arms of
yours and joined in. You always appreciated hard work and did
give credit where it was due. Judging by the photos, you are looking pretty good for an old fella, ha ha. I too am proud of you
old friend. You bet you can. Keep up the great work, Jim John

I am touched by the work that you are doing to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in Africa. Kudo's to you!!! I am saddened however with the lack of interest of the western media and society regarding the plight of the poor and vulnerable in that continent. While I am involved in sponsoring children impacted by Aids, I feel that there is so much more that I could and should do. The images of suffering children particularly haunt me, and it is this that stirs me to move to action.

I recently became aware of the presentations that you have held regarding the Tour D'Africa. I am interested in attending. When is the next session being held?

thank you in advance.

JJ - You have to do something with this. All the preparation, the energy and most importantly the journey that you have been through. Please share this with us so that we can learn from it and be more aware of our own "YOU BET I CAN" approach to aspiring dreams. I would like to help! Imagine if you could stimulate some change and growth for community members - and several of them go out and create positive change that also inspires others! One big wave of inspiration for our community to share and celebrate! We need to start celebrating with your great achievement. Let's do it! Are you game?

Mr. H. There hasn't been a man, I've. known since my father. That I've been proud of, amazed by or respected. My father couldn't read or write. He managed to keep food on the table, clothes on our backs and a roof over our heads. Everything he did was for his family, we were his cause. As usual when you put your mind to do something, you don't go half way. Fighting for a cause you believe in. I've seen both sides of you. The businessman, who is sometimes outragious. The human, getting in there with your hands and feet, heart and soul. I've been following your progress along with the pictures. You look different more yourself. Outside with the elements, sweatting from a more than usual workout, of cycling. P.S. I find myself looking for your articles on the weekend and as I comfortably sat sipping my coffee and reading your latest journal, I was compelled by your efforts for both causes and sent my contribution in this morning. We are bombarded by requests to support worthy causes so I have learned to ignore many and select a few. However, if you can pitch a tent, ride for hours and days on end, the least I can do is use the keyboard to send in a donation to support your efforts.

I visited your site this morning as well and am enjoying the marvelous photos. Perhaps you could raise some additional funds on your return by hosting an evening (for a fee, of course) and taking us on a photo journey of your experience.

A word of advice from somebody who has never been to Africa, as this must be an exilerating experience and would like to be in your shoes but quit trying to be crocodile bate by being a person seeking a bit of solitude. A show about crocks I watched onetime said they could nail a wide awake person 1.5 m from a Rivers edge in a heartbeat so quit being so hard on yourself. JJ - you are down to the final crunch - dig deep, pedal hard & love life as we know it. I'm sure your perspective of the planet has changed dramatically & you've drawn energy from the people, the landscape & the unknown of each day. I thought running across the Arctic in 24 hour sunlight was a challenge - that is merely a warm-up for your daily expeditions. My curiosity was up when we spoke last & your eyes were wide, heart was pounding & you had a look that something big was about to change your life. I would like to do a spin class fundraiser to help your cause & raise money for the cancer centre. There is a great buzz about what you are doing & I love the photos & journal. You are doing it right.

Hi Jimi, well it`s great to see you`re hanging in there " ole man ", seeing the African Tour through your camera lens is exciting and inspiring to say the least. No doubt you may have heard recent anouncements concerning the new hospital, can you say ,
" You Bet We Can ", benifits to come ,no doubt in part by your public efforts. The Bereko Experience got me thinking about a formal book drive for that elementary school mentioned. It sounds like a trip back in time to the days of early colonializm , these people are deserving of so much more.
God bless, see you at homecoming once you`re rested.

I've decided to take an independent study course and my son said "Do you think mom that you will be able to juggle work with school" and I replied "You bet I can". So thanks Mr. H. for the encouragement.Keep up the good work. We still miss you at the Inn.
Sincerely

Mr. Hilsinger, , I was talking to a gentleman visiting Victoria B.C for the Curling Championships and as we talked he told me of your courageous endeavour. As a result, I searched the net and found your site. Quite impressive ( but not surprising). I felt great pride in knowing and felt I should drop you a note. Good luck on your mission and I will pass along info on your fund raising efforts to the people I know on the west coast. Good Cycling from Victoria- Elmano Lima

Thank you to you all for your inspirational and encouraging messages. I started trying to respond to them all but just can't find the time. It is go, go and go again all day long and when you get a day off which co-incides with an internet connection, I try to update the website diary.
Please take time, if you can find more than I can, to network with your friends and to encourage everyone to support the charitable causes we have selected. .....The Stephen Lewis Foundation for Aids in Africa and The Algoma Regional Cancer Center. You can donate right on the website. Thanks and I hope to talk to you after this epic adventure and ordeal????.....just kidding....challenge!!!

hey jj, just a hello from one of the EFI's from the the Tours first year. I am curious as to how you liked the thre days of mental hell going through the Lava Desert in Northern Kenya. I have never cursed more in my life as the days on that road. I had the pleasure of seeing the Nomads passing by on this road and was one of the more special imprints from the tour and had ther pleasure of sharing a power bar with some friendly nom,ads farther down the road.. I am sure you will have stories for a life time like us from the first year.. Man i remember like it was yesterday climbing up the volcano to Marsibit and having a big ass male baboon run in front of my bike and scream at me. Turns out he had all his babes in trees beside the volcano and i guess he mistook my sore red ass for competition.--That campsite in Marsibit was beautiful.
Good luck the rest of the way and enjoy Tanzania--the most beautiful riding for me was Tanzania-really fely like Africa there.

Say high to Collin and Randy and the rest of the riders. No matter of the pain and hardships it is the the most exhilerating thing i have ever done with no regrets---scotty

Jim -

I'm absolutely in shock here - and full of respect, awe, and much happy exhilaration on your behalf!!
Why didn't anyone tell us what you were up to?

I've been wondering about you this winter - we hadn't seen you for so long - and then, coming inside from a big sunny, blue and diamonds ski day, here you are on the radio talking to Dan Lessard! From hot Africa! ... and on not just ANY trip!

I immediately checked out the site on the web. It is amazing - feel a bit guilty to have found this out so late - just been having too much fun here in the woods I guess. After last year's "trip" I just cannot get enough of life and laughter. There wasn't a lot of that on the chemo ward.

And now what an amazing actual journey you are on - but then again, not so different from your whole life to this point. You are such an inspiring guy. You help people to be strong and believe in themselves and their actions and you've always given so much to our community of friends and of place. This is just another clear cool drop in the silver cup.

At one point last winter, I thought if I just gave up and died it would REALLY piss you off so I took your advice
-and -
....... now it is MY turn to say - "stay as tough as nails" and ... "you are nature - you are the rock"..... because you DO rock, Mr. J.J. Hilsinger!
We are holding you in our hearts and thoughts tonight - may the wind be at your back for at least some of the time and we sure hope the seat don't chafe too much -

robin

Hey JJ!!
I'm just emailing you to tell you that i'm missing you ALOT! I really hope that your having fun on your tour, and are having lots of new and interesting experiences. I just wanted to tell you that I'm doing an oral on your tour, in french too, and maybe you can send me some pictures or something. Right now, I'm in Toronto with my friend Alexis visiting her cousins for march break. We went for a 7 km run that took 40 minutes, and either of us stopped once. Dance is going really well, with a compitition coming up soon. I'm practicing really hard and preparing well. Soccer has started too and thats going well. Jamie came to the Soo too, and we went snowshoeing at your place. It was really fun because first we had to snowshoe into the driveway(because someone isn't getting it plowed) and the we were doing cartweels on the lake! I really hope that this tour ends soon because I want you to come back home. I really miss you and I want to see you soon. Call Mom sometime and maybe we can talk.

Hi Jim:
My apologies for not being able to have one of our staff attend your news conference. It came with relative short notice and we had other committments at the time. I see from your journal that the trip itself was a fairly last minute decision, and we first learned of it about 6 weeks in. We did make reference to the trip the day of your newser and I instructed John Murtha to keep tabs via your website - similar to the way we handled the LSSU alumni's Lewis & Clark re-enactment last year. I'm off sick today and have spent some time going over your journal and it certainly is compelling stuff. Good Luck, Good Health and Be Safe!
We will continue to monitor your progress and make reference to both your journal entries and your website as a way of attracting ongoing attention to your beneficiary causes.
As you get nearer your destination we will attempt to make arrangements for a phone hookup.
All the best.

Dear J.J.
We truly appreciate that you have chosen The Stephen Lewis Foundation as the beneficiary of your expedition. It is also heart-warming to see the community of Sault Ste. Marie mobilized to support you and subsequently raise funds for those affected by AIDS in Africa.
The funds donated will reach communities in Africa in an intensely human way - helping to provide for those who die, meals for AIDS orphans, or something as simple as a visit from someone to give a bath and a blanket to a dying woman.
We wish you the best of luck with this cycling challenge!
With warm appreciation,

February 25, 2005

Yo JJ-

I just read an article in the Soo Star today (Feb 25) profiling your epic ride in Africa. I must say I am very impressed.
I decided to have a look/see at your website as well as the Tour's. I linked as well to one of the women's (Leana from S.Africa) websites and read her journal to date. Don't worry I'm going to read your's next. Anyway, sounds like a very tough go - albeit the desert scenery is stunning.
You don't know me but you've seen me around town with Ron Prickett (I'm assuming you do know him). I do some X-C skiing and some cycling and I must say that initially your African tour sounded like the experience of a life time. That is until I went to the website and got an appreciation of how grueling it is. People dying and breaking bones, scorching heat, bad roads, flies and sickness. My hat is off to you! I don't know if I would have the guts, not to mention the stamina, to do it. I'm sure it will be for you an "experience of a life time". Maybe even one of those pivotal, life changing experiences. One of many.
I'm certainly at that point in my life where I want a challenge - physical and mental. I think as well, that I should be doing something from a humanitarian standpoint. I just can't decide what.
You've certainly got it all covered. And you are an inspiration to us all. I wish you all the best in the weeks ahead.
Later,
Valerie

As I am reading your journal I am thinking you are still enjoying, and as you say there is not a way to get mad at a boy whom is thinking maybe I can get some food or other things. We encountered the same in some places in South Amerika, but hey, we have it all, they have a strow hut. Happy people we are that we can do things like this. Nevertheles it is good you have your things back. Important on such a long biketrip. I saw a few Dutch cyclists are there too. Seeing your pictures from the campsites in the dessert makes me feel that I have to go again too. In juli it will be. We changed our destination, we are going to Africa as well. The borders in China and India are too much disputed and Nepal is very bad at the moment. We are going to start in South Africa, and ending up somewhere in Europa, Keep enjoying the trip, do you have a camelback yet? Brave man, all the best. Greetings from a dutch cyclist. Johan.

Hi Jim: I wish I was there with you! What an inspiration you are to so many Canadians, not just those in the Sault, but all over Canada. I know you can do it as you have with so many other challenges that you have taken on.
I look forward to reading your journals and one day being able to sit down somewhere in a room with many others as you give us a full report.
All the best of luck -- Bob Diotte, Ottawa.

Jim (aka JJ) is at it again. “The Tour d’Afrique”- endurance par excellence. Always another mountain to climb, but, boy oh boy, this sure is a mother of a mid life crisis. Oh yes, another by this physical and mental and forward looking giant who has a driving urge to constantly work for the betterment of all.
Go to it Jim. Go to it!
